Published in Cell Reports, the study found impaired calcium signaling in salivary glands reduces saliva production, affecting oral health. Using a mouse model, researchers noted decreased saliva, increased acidity, and inflammation markers. Treatment with pilocarpine improved salivary flow in mice, suggesting potential therapeutic avenues. Findings highlight that biological factors, beyond oral hygiene, contribute to oral disease risk in this population.
