Periodontal Therapy
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums that surround your teeth. It is one of the most common reasons why adults lose their teeth. Gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, is pain-free resulting in most people being unaware that they have the disease.
During your visit with Dr. Florio or Dr. Kohner they will measure the space between your teeth and gums, this will determine if you have periodontal disease.
Plaque, a sticky form of bacteria which accumulates on your teeth, is the primary cause of gum disease. With regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups you can prevent periodontal disease and help to keep your natural teeth.
Scaling
Scaling, sometimes called a deep cleaning, is a non-surgical procedure used to prevent gum disease. It involves thoroughly cleaning the plaque, toxins, and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces.
If additional treatment is required, we offer Arestin, an effective antibiotic treatment. Arestin is placed in the infected pockets, after your scaling and root planning procedure, and released over time to kill the bacteria and eliminate the infection.
