Dental Tribune International  (6/3) reported that researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine have developed a bioengineered chewing gum that reduces oral microbes associated with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Led by Dr. Henry Daniell, the gum contains a protein from lablab beans and an antimicrobial peptide, effectively reducing HPV and harmful bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum by over 99% in lab tests. The next step involves clinical trials pending FDA investigational new drug application approval.
